pumpkin guts and glory

pumpkin carving 003

Tonight we carved our lovely pumpkins from the trip to the pumpkin patch.

I think that Scott got a bit hungry while we were carving. I caught him trying to take a little bite.

I think our end result was pretty good, even if Scott ate a few pieces. Scott loved the little devil and I thought that the skull was fairly appropriate for the season. And who doesn't love the standard bucktooth jack-o-lantern?  Happy Trick or Treating to all of you!

time to bundle up!

This wonderful fall weather makes me think of wearing scarves and bundling up and all the people or things that remind me of bundling up.

Like being a kid and not moving because you had so many layers on.

That little touch of warmth and safety on a cold rainy day.

This week dinner will be

To be home alone with my oven...

Today Is my first day home alone since getting back from Georgia and I wanted to try making these mini pies that I say on Bakerella and Not Martha. I wanted to try my hand at tiny cherry pies!!!pie day 011

Unfortunately my very tiny cupcake pan has been "misplaced", so I made slightly larger tiny pies in my regular cupcake pan. I used cherry pie filling because of a lack of fresh cherries. I added a little almond and vanilla extract, lemon and orange zest and a sprinkle of lemon juice to the filling. Here are the results...

I was super excited with the end results and got to thinking about the upcoming holiday season and I thought I would try my hand at some pie of the pumpkin persuasion. I used a basic pumpkin pie filling recipe and added freshly ground nutmeg to the mix along with a touch of maple syrup.

I think my next try will be pecan and then maybe caramel. I have to admit that pumpkin is one of my favorites and I just couldn't resist trying one! Thank you again to Bakerella and Not Martha for opening my eyes to the wonders of tiny pies!

Pumpkin Day

pumpkin day 007

Yesterday was my first full day at home and Scott and I went to get pumpkins at Hunt Club Farm. It was breezy and cool. Everyone was wearing sweatshirts, coats and bundling up in general. All in all I'd say it was the perfect pumpkin picking day minus the little bits of rain.

pumpkin day 010

We were having a hard time choosing the perfect pumpkins for our porch until we had a little visitor stop by to help!

pumpkin day 005

After a long hard search we found the best tall skinny pumpkin, the best round pumpkin and the best small sweet pumpkin along with a few little tiny pumpkins. And we were off on our merry little way to the pumpkin pick up.

pumpkin day 012

I am proud to say that all of our pumpkins made it home safe a sound without any missing chunks and are taking up residence on the font porch. Although a few little pumpkins snuck in last night and I found them on top of the buffet this morning all huddled up together.

Blustery days call for warm stews

It is a wonderful early fall day with a wonderful breeze and all I want is a bowl of this stew. It's great with grilled chicken if you aren't into tofu and sometimes I add chilies in adobo for a little kick and smokey  flavor. And I always add a few more green onions to the top with a bit of sour cream and cornbread on the side.
